Commuting just got significantly more affordable for students in Metro Manila. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon today announced that students will now receive a 50% discount on fares for the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2), and Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), effective immediately.
This substantial fare reduction aims to ease the financial burden on students, a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., especially with the ongoing school year. "This will be a huge help for families, especially for parents who are struggling to send their kids to school. The money they save can be used for other expenses like [school] projects, additional allowance, or other school expenses," Secretary Dizon stated.

How to Avail the 50% Student Discount?
The discount applies to all students, including those pursuing postgraduate studies. To avail of the 50% off, students simply need to present their valid school ID for the current school year at the ticket counter.
However, a key detail to note is that the discount can only be claimed through single journey fares for now. Efforts are underway to program the discount into Beep cards and stored value tickets, with an expected implementation in the coming months. For the time being, students must purchase their discounted tickets at the station tellers.
The new fare matrix reflects these significant savings. For the MRT-3, the minimum fare for students will now be P6. Meanwhile, the LRT-2, which consistently sees the largest student ridership among the three rail lines, will have a minimum fare of P8, with the end-to-end fare dropping to P18.
The implementation of this 50% student discount is a welcome development for thousands of students who rely on the metro's train systems for their daily commute, offering tangible relief amidst rising costs of living.
