FRIENDSTER IS BACK: Here's How to Create an Account

In a surprising move that taps into early 2000s nostalgia, the pioneering social media giant Friendster has officially stepped back into the ring. However, this isn't the Friendster of old. The platform has re-emerged with a strictly "back-to-basics" philosophy, aiming to fix the modern frustrations of the digital age.

The "Bumping" Revolution

The most talked-about feature of the new Friendster is its approach to "Friend Requests." Moving away from global search bars and "people you may know" lists, the platform has introduced a proximity-based system. Users can now add friends simply by tapping their phones together.

"No 'suggested strangers' — your network is built from real connections," Friendster stated in a recent announcement. By requiring physical proximity to connect, the platform is positioning itself as a tool for real-life social circles rather than a hunt for follower counts.

A Promise of Privacy and Purity

In a direct challenge to the business models of modern tech titans, Friendster is making bold promises regarding user experience and data:

No Algorithms: Your feed is determined by what your friends post, not what a machine thinks will keep you scrolling.

No Ads or Spam: The platform promises an ad-free environment and a rigorous stance against dummy accounts and bots.

Data Sovereignty: Friendster explicitly stated it will not sell user data to third parties, a major pain point for users of contemporary social networks.

The Long Road Back

This relaunch marks the latest chapter in a turbulent history. Once the undisputed king of social media, Friendster shuttered its original networking services in 2011, famously conceding that it had become a "Facebook world."

After a brief stint as a social entertainment and gaming site in 2012, the platform went on a "break" in 2015, citing a challenging industry landscape. This 2026 revival appears to be its most aggressive attempt yet to reclaim its legacy by offering an alternative to "big tech."

Current Limitations

For now, the "new" Friendster is an exclusive club. The app is currently only available for Apple (iOS) users, with no official word yet on when an Android version will hit the Google Play Store.

While it remains to be seen if users are willing to trade the convenience of global discovery for the intimacy of "real connections," Friendster is betting that in a world of digital noise, people are finally ready to go back to where it all started.
