In line with recent directives from the City Government of Makati, the Makati Life Medical Center has officially transitioned to a new set of guidelines regarding outpatient medicines under the Makati Health Plus (Yellow Card) Program.
The policy shift is part of the local government’s strategic measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Yellow Card Benefit Program and to guarantee a fair allocation of healthcare resources for all Makatizens.
Timeline and Transition Period
The implementation of the directive underwent a deliberate transition phase to prioritize patient welfare and prevent sudden disruptions in healthcare access:
- April 30, 2026: Makati Life received a formal notice from the Office of the City Administrator regarding the cessation of outpatient pharmaceutical dispensing under the Yellow Card Program. The directive was originally scheduled for immediate implementation on May 1, 2026.
- May 1 – May 30, 2026 (Deferment Period): To ensure a smooth transition and proper patient preparation, Makati Life coordinated closely with the City Government, resulting in a temporary deferment of the policy. During this time, Makati Life requested collaborative meetings to iron out the technical mechanisms of the implementation.
- May 31, 2026: Following the agreed-upon deferment period, the directive officially took effect.
What is Changing Under the New Guidelines?
Effective May 31, 2026, outpatient prescriptions and take-home medications will no longer be covered by the Yellow Card Program at Makati Life Medical Center.
Patients who require outpatient or take-home medicines have alternative options within the facility:
- Cash-Basis Purchases: Prescribed outpatient drugs remain available for purchase at the Makati Life OPD Pharmacy on a cash basis.
- Affordable Alternatives: The hospital’s medical team is fully prepared to assist patients by offering and recommending available, budget-friendly generic alternatives whenever necessary.
What Remains Covered?
Makati Life clarifies that the directive is specific only to outpatient and take-home medications. All other essential hospital services under the Yellow Card Program remain fully operational and fully covered.
These continuing benefits include:
- In-hospital consultations
- Diagnostic and laboratory procedures
- Emergency care services
- Inpatient confinement (including all medications administered during confinement or emergency treatments)
- Other comprehensive institutional hospital services
Forward-Looking Collaboration and Patient Support
Makati Life emphasizes its continuous coordination with the City Government of Makati to develop interconnected pharmacy systems. This technical integration aims to reinforce and stabilize the long-term sustainability of free medicine distribution through the appropriate channels of the Yellow Card program.
