GCash, Debit & Credit Card Payments Soon Accepted in LRT, MRT — DOTr

Commuting via Metro Manila’s train systems may soon become more convenient as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced plans to allow passengers to pay for fares using GCash, PayMaya, and debit and credit cards.

According to DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon, the new digital payment system could be launched as early as July 2025. Once implemented, passengers of LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 will be able to simply tap their smartphones or bank cards at station turnstiles to pay for their rides—ushering in a long-awaited upgrade in the country’s public transport system.

“We’re preparing to roll this out around July,” Dizon said, noting that the technology is being designed to support various card types and mobile wallets.

A Shift to Modernized Payment Options

This isn’t the first time the government attempted to implement cashless transactions in public transportation. Back in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government mandated contactless fare payments on the EDSA Busway, but the move was met with public criticism due to limited payment options and poor accessibility.

This time, however, the new system will be optional, giving commuters flexibility while encouraging a gradual shift to cashless commuting.

Earlier versions of this initiative were rumored to support only Mastercard holders. However, the DOTr has not specified any card restrictions in its latest statements—suggesting broader compatibility with various debit and credit cards, and potentially increasing accessibility for more commuters.

What This Means for Commuters

Once operational, the system will allow:

  • GCash and PayMaya users to scan or tap their phones at fare gates

  • Debit and credit card holders to tap their cards at designated terminals

  • Faster entry and exit at stations, reducing long lines at ticket booths

  • Enhanced safety through reduced cash handling

This initiative follows closely after the launch of the “Pamilya 1+3 Pass Promo”, further indicating the government’s intent to modernize and make rail commuting more accessible to all Filipinos.

What’s Next?

The DOTr has yet to announce specific station rollouts, compatible card networks, or mobile wallet integration details. However, transportation officials assured the public that updates will be provided prior to the full launch.

For now, commuters are encouraged to continue using existing options like beep™ cards while waiting for the new system to go live.
