Makati Launches Free Bus Rides for Public School Students

The Makati City government has rolled out a new initiative aimed at easing the daily commute of public school students: six newly purchased buses will soon offer free rides along fixed routes and schedules, similar to the national government’s point-to-point transport system.

Announced on Wednesday, the free school bus service will cater exclusively to students enrolled in Makati’s public schools, with routes set to pass through key barangays and school zones in the city.

The rollout will be implemented in two phases. For the pilot run, select schools with high student populations will be prioritized. Consultations with school administrators, barangay officials, and parent associations are already underway to ensure safety and efficiency before the program expands to all public schools.

Outgoing Mayor Abby Binay, who spearheaded the program, said the initiative aims to relieve the burden of daily transportation costs, especially for low-income families.

“With this initiative, we are making it easier for students to get to school safely and on time so they can focus on learning,” Binay said in a statement.

Positive Reactions from the Community

The program has been met with praise from parents and educators alike.

“I have three children in public school, and transportation has always been a daily struggle. This is a big help,” said Analyn Ramos, a parent from Barangay Pembo.

Teachers are also welcoming the move. “Punctuality has been an issue for many students who rely on inconsistent jeepney rides. This program can really improve attendance,” said public school teacher Eric Santos.

Even student leaders have voiced their support. “We’re excited. It’s not just a bus—it’s a statement that the city cares about students like us,” shared Grade 10 student Marianne Cruz.

City officials say the buses are equipped with safety features and are compliant with child-friendly transport guidelines.

With Makati setting the pace, local governments in other cities are now watching closely—this initiative could become a model for student-focused transport support across the country.
