TAGUIG CITY – Former Taguig Mayor Lino Cayetano, who is running for Taguig-Pateros representative in the upcoming elections, has proposed a series of weekly debates for local candidates during the campaign period.
Cayetano suggested that instead of engaging in mudslinging, candidates should participate in debates every Saturday, with different organizations, including the church, hosting or sponsoring the discussions.

“Gawin nating modelo sa Pilipinas ang kampanya sa atin. Issues ang pinag-uusapan—mga problema at solusyon. Plataporma, programa, hindi paninira,” Cayetano said.
The former mayor emphasized that such a format would allow Taguig and Pateros to set an example for other local governments, promoting a campaign based on ideas rather than black propaganda, vote-buying, or extravagant spending on entertainment.
Cayetano announced that he will formally submit his proposal to the local Commission on Elections (COMELEC) next week.
“Pakita natin sa Taguig at Pateros na ang eleksyon natin ay makabuluhan at tunay na para sa ikagaganda ng ating bayan,” he added.
As election season heats up, Cayetano’s call for issue-based discussions presents a challenge to his fellow candidates to prioritize meaningful discourse over divisive tactics. It remains to be seen whether local COMELEC officials and other candidates will support his proposal.
