PAGASA Warns of New Tropical Cyclone as Severe Tropical Storm Kristine Batters Luzon

As Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami) continues to unleash strong winds and heavy rains across Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has raised concerns about a low-pressure area (LPA) east of Mindanao that is likely to develop into a tropical cyclone.

As of 8 a.m. Thursday, the LPA was located 2,295 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). PAGASA reported that the system has a "high chance" of intensifying into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours. If it enters PAR, it will be named "Leon."

PAGASA's weather forecast for October 23 to 29 suggests that the disturbance may enter the northeastern boundary of PAR before recurving towards Japan.

Assistant Weather Services Chief Chris Perez cautioned in a televised interview, “Let us expect rainfall not only in Northern Luzon but also in the Central Luzon area.”

Kristine to Exit PAR, But May Loop Back

Severe Tropical Storm Kristine is forecast to exit PAR and move toward the West Philippine Sea by Friday. However, PAGASA's 2 p.m. tropical cyclone bulletin indicated that Kristine may perform a "loop" in the West Philippine Sea over the weekend, with potential movement back toward PAR early next week.

“The exact behavior of Kristine will depend heavily on the development of the LPA east of PAR,” PAGASA said.

Kristine, which is forecast to re-intensify, may remain a severe tropical storm over the next five days, but the possibility of it strengthening into a typhoon cannot be ruled out.

PAGASA urges residents in affected areas to stay updated on weather advisories and prepare for continuous rainfall in both Northern and Central Luzon.
