Blueleaf Energy to Invest $1.5 Billion in Floating Solar Projects in Laguna

Blueleaf Energy Philippines, a portfolio company of Macquarie Capital, announced a substantial investment exceeding one billion dollars to develop floating solar power farms in Laguna. At a media briefing on Thursday, Blueleaf Energy president Chris Chua revealed the company’s plan to invest around $1.5 billion in these innovative projects.

Blueleaf Energy, in collaboration with joint venture partners NKS Energy Utilities and SunAsia Energy, is set to develop a total of 1.5 gigawatts (GW) or 1,500 megawatts (MW) of floating solar capacity across Laguna's bodies of water. This investment marks a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy landscape.

Among the notable projects is NKS Solar One, a 250-MW floating solar installation to be located on lakes Caliraya and Lumot in Laguna. This venture is poised to become the first utility-scale floating solar project in the Philippines. Construction is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024, with the project expected to come online by the first quarter of 2026.

Additionally, Blueleaf Energy and SunAsia Energy are co-developing a massive 1.3-GW floating solar facility on Laguna Lake. This expansive project will cover the towns of Cabuyao, Sta. Rosa, Calamba, Victoria, and Bay, significantly boosting the region's renewable energy capacity.

“Like in any other power project, we're looking into project financing. So, it's going to have to be like long-term loans from banks and then the equity part of it… it's something that basically, we, as the investor, will be covering,” Chua stated. He emphasized Blueleaf Energy's commitment to accelerating the energy transition in the Philippines through innovative renewable energy solutions aimed at achieving a net-zero future.

Floating solar technologies offer several advantages over traditional ground-mounted systems, including reduced land preparation and increased photovoltaic (PV) efficiency due to the cooling effect of water. These benefits make floating solar a viable and efficient solution for renewable energy generation in regions with limited land availability.

Blueleaf Energy's ambitious projects are expected to play a pivotal role in the Philippines' journey towards sustainable energy, contributing significantly to the nation's renewable energy goals and setting a precedent for future developments in the sector.
