Abby waiting for ‘sign’ on Taguig mayoral run

Makati Mayor Abby Binay is looking for a sign that would prompt her to run for mayor of Taguig City in the 2025 midterm elections.

Binay, who is serving her final term as Makati mayor, said on Tuesday she is still waiting for a “sign.”

“There’s the corny saying that I’m still waiting for a sign. That’s really the truth. I’m still waiting for a sign. Not a miracle. I’m waiting for some divine intervention,” she said.

Binay said gunning for Taguig’s top post is “an option, but it is at the bottom of my list.”

“I don’t want to say ‘Yes, I’m running’ or ‘No, I’m not running.’ It’s on the list,” she added.

Binay pointed out that a clear sign of her decision to run as Taguig mayor would be changing her residency from Makati to Taguig.

In running for Taguig’s mayoral post, Binay explained that she needs to establish at least one year of residency in Taguig, which would require her to resign as Makati’s mayor.

“I cannot be a sitting mayor where I am no longer a resident. So I will have to resign and move my residency and voter’s registration to Taguig,” Binay said.

“So that’s probably something you’ll have to wait for. That will be the sure sign of my decision for 2025,” she added.

Binay first hinted at her plan to run as Taguig mayor last year after losing the 10 enlisted men’s barrio or “embo” barangays to Taguig.

In a 2021 ruling that was affirmed in 2023, the Supreme Court granted jurisdiction of the 10 “embo” barangays to Taguig.

These are Barangays Cembo, South Cembo, Comembo, East Rembo, West Rembo, Pembo, Pitogo, Post Proper Northside, Post Proper Southside and Rizal.
