President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. has declared the suspension of classes in public schools as well as work in government offices this 25 August 2023, Friday, in Metro Manila and Bulacan to give way for the opening of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
The announcement was made through Memorandum Circular #27 dated 15 August 2023. In the memorandum, it was mentioned that classes in public schools as well as work in government offices are being suspended fo 25 August 2023 “in view of the commitment of the public sector towards wider involvement and participation in sports promotion and development, and in order to extend its full support and assistance to the Philippine Sports Commission in ensuring the safe, orderly, and successful conduct of the opening ceremonies of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.”

The country is co-hosting the said quadrennial global sports event together with Indonesia and Japan. The opening ceremonies will be held at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan, and the President is expected to attend it. A total of 32 national teams will be competing during the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Meanwhile, the Malacañang also added that the suspension of work in private companies and classes in private schools is left to the discretion of their respective heads.
