Isko urges fast-food chains in Manila: Hire senior citizens, PWDs

MANILA—Manila Mayor Isko Moreno on Friday urged fast-food chains in the capital to hire senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWD) to provide more opportunities for the city’s elderly and disadvantaged.

Each branch should hire at least 4 senior citizens or PWDs and assign them to do “light” tasks, Moreno said in his weekly Capital Report.

“Give them a chance, an opportunity to earn hanggat kaya pa nila,” he said.

“Marami diyan gusto magtrabaho hindi para kumita pero para makapaglibang, meron ba silang magawa na makadadagdag sa productivity level nila.

“Meron naman diyan na kaya pa nila, gusto pa nila kumita, o bigyan natin ng pagkakataon.”

Under the law, the age of retirement in the Philippines is 60 years old.

Moreno said the City Council of Manila is already drafting an ordinance for the labor concept he patterned after Japan and the United States.

If these food chains can do it abroad, they could also do it in Manila, he said.
