President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday inaugurated a new P17.5-billion passenger terminal on the island's main airport here, hoping to lure as many 12.5 million passengers annually.
Cebuano furniture-maker Kenneth Cobonpue, whose clients include Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, helped conceptualize the terminal, which has timber arches and floor-to-ceiling glass panels that evoke the feel of the country's 5-star beach destinations.
GMR-Megawide, a Filipino-Indian consortium, built the 65,500-square meter Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2. It operates Terminal 1, which it also refurbished.
The expanded Mactan Cebu International Airport, the country's second-largest air terminal, hosts 26 airlines that fly to 25 international and 30 domestic destinations, the consortium said in a statement.
"We are committed to delivering a world-class travel experience to the public with our signature Filipino warmth," GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corp president Louie Ferrer said.
"With the addition of Terminal 2, not only will we be able to sustainably cope with the steadily increasing number of passengers, we will also open Cebu to more international flights," he said.
Hong Kong's Integrated Design Associates, the group behind the architecture of Beijing and Hong Kong airports, designed the new Mactan terminal. Filipino designers Budji Layug and Royal Pineda helped conceptualize the structure, GMR-Megawide said.
Terminal 2 has 48 check-in counters and 7 passenger boarding bridges. It is also equipped with boarding pass scanners, self-check-in kiosks and expandable check-in counters, the consortium said.
British food and beverage operator SSP Group, which caters to Heathrow Airport in London and JFK in New York, will manage the concessionaires in Terminal 2.
