PH Malls Waive Overnight Parking Fees to Provide Safe Havens Amid Typhoon Inday Threat

Major shopping mall operators across Luzon have opened their facilities to provide free overnight parking for vehicle owners seeking refuge from the heavy rains and potential flooding brought by Typhoon Inday (international name: Bavi).

The swift response follows a formal memorandum issued on Thursday afternoon by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando "Don" Artes. The directive urged mall management groups to open up their parking spaces as temporary safe havens for properties and vehicles, particularly for residents living in low-lying and flood-prone communities.

According to state weather bureau PAGASA’s July 9 afternoon update, while Inday has slightly weakened from a super typhoon into a regular typhoon, it continues to pack maximum sustained winds of 165 km/h and gusts of up to 205 km/h. Together with the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat), the weather system is expected to unleash intense rain showers and strong wind gusts over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and several other provinces through the weekend.

“It is safer to place your valuables where they won't be reached by floodwaters and park at our malls,” Chairman Artes stated, clarifying that the waiver explicitly covers the overnight period (typically from mall closing at 10:00 PM until 6:00 AM the following morning), after which regular daytime rates will resume.

Participating Malls and Locations

As of Thursday evening, the MMDA has confirmed that the following major retail hubs are participating in the public safety initiative, with more establishments expected to join the developing list:

SM Supermalls (Luzon-wide branches)

Robinsons Malls (Luzon-wide branches)

Vista Malls

Filinvest Malls

  • Festival Mall (Alabang)
  • Fora Mall (Tagaytay)
  • Main Square (Bacoor)
  • Westgate (Alabang)
  • Bloc 10 (Alabang)
  • South Station (Alabang)

Megaworld Malls

Guidelines for Motorists

The MMDA advises vehicle owners taking advantage of the free overnight space to strictly observe standard parking security protocols. Drivers must lock their vehicles securely, avoid leaving critical documents or exposed electronics inside, and follow the individual traffic and safety rules set by each mall’s security team.

Many of these commercial centers are also opening up select areas to provide stranded commuters and nearby residents access to clean restrooms, standard mobile charging stations, and free Wi-Fi connectivity.

The public is strongly encouraged to monitor the official social media channels of the participating mall operators and the MMDA for real-time updates and localized space availability.
