In a proactive move to boost community preparedness, Makati City Mayor Abby Binay-Campos has ordered the distribution of Emergency Go Bags to 11,000 households containing elderly and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
The initiative is a crucial component of the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office’s (DRRMO) Community Emergency Readiness Project. This program is designed to equip Makatizens with the essential resources and skills needed to remain resilient when facing various disasters.
Survival Essentials for Vulnerable Residents
Each carefully curated Go Bag is constructed from waterproof material and packed with vital survival items. The contents include:
- Food bars and water
- First aid and hygiene kits
- Flashlights and whistles
- Emergency blankets
- Rope
- Basic tents
- Other essential survival tools
This targeted distribution prioritizes the city’s most vulnerable residents—the elderly and PWDs—ensuring they have immediate access to necessary items during emergencies where assistance may be delayed.
Recognized as a Resilience Hub
The distribution effort further solidifies Makati's reputation as a leader in disaster preparedness. The city's comprehensive efforts, spearheaded by Mayor Binay-Campos, have received international acclaim.
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) officially declared Makati as the first and only Resilience Hub in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. This recognition underscores the effectiveness of the city’s strategies in mitigating risks and building a disaster-resilient community.
The continuous commitment of the local government to these preparedness programs aims to ensure the safety and self-sufficiency of all residents, particularly those who require extra assistance during crisis situations.
