Nationwide Launch of the DSWD’s Food Stamp Program Set for July

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is gearing up for the nationwide rollout of the "Walang Gutom 2027: Food Stamp Program" this July, following a successful six-month pilot phase.

The program, championed by President Marcos through Executive Order No. 44, represents a cornerstone of the government's efforts to combat voluntary hunger among low-income households.

The Food Stamp Program aims to alleviate hunger by providing monetary-based assistance to impoverished families via Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards. These cards can be used to purchase select food items from approved partner merchants, ensuring that beneficiaries have access to essential nutrition.

DSWD Undersecretary Edu Punay announced during a recent press briefing in Quezon City that preparations are in full swing for the program's expansion. The initiative will initially target 300,000 families across 10 regions and 21 provinces. To facilitate this, the DSWD has hired 1,000 validators who will begin the crucial task of validating and registering beneficiaries this month.

“This month po magsisimula na iyong validation at ating registration ng 300,000 beneficiaries para sa July na rin po natin. Naka-hire na po this month ng 1,000 validators dito sa mga implementation sites. Twenty-one provinces in 10 regions po iyan na na-identify ng ating departamento bilang priority areas,” Punay stated.

The pilot phase, which commenced in December last year, involved 3,000 families and is set to conclude this month. An initial assessment conducted between February and March indicated significant positive impacts on the beneficiaries' lives. A comprehensive review and assessment of the pilot phase will begin next month to refine and optimize the program ahead of the broader implementation.

The DSWD's role is pivotal in identifying eligible beneficiaries and ensuring the smooth distribution of food stamps. This requires close collaboration with various stakeholders, including local government units and partner merchants, to ensure the program's efficiency and timely delivery of benefits.

As the Food Stamp Program moves towards full implementation, it is poised to become a transformative measure in addressing hunger and food insecurity in the Philippines. By targeting the most vulnerable populations, the program aims to create a significant and lasting impact on national well-being.
