Lawmakers propose relocation of the House of Representatives in BGC

A resolution has been filed by three congressmen, including the House senior deputy speaker, to explore the potential relocation of the House of Representatives to Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City.

House Resolution 1390 proposes the establishment of an ad hoc committee tasked with studying the feasibility of constructing new facilities for the lower chamber at BGC, thereby shifting its current location from Batasan Hills, Quezon City.

The proponents of the resolution, namely Senior Deputy Speaker Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales (Pampanga), Rep. Luis Raymund “LRay” Villafuerte Jr. (Camarines Sur, 2nd), and Rep. David “Jay-Jay” Suarez (Quezon City, 2nd District), assert that, given the Senate's planned move to BGC by July 2024, the House should consider a parallel relocation.

The resolution highlights several reasons for this potential move, emphasizing the importance of enhanced communication and coordination in legislative work. Additionally, it suggests evaluating factors such as efficient public transportation options and connectivity to major thoroughfares when selecting a new location for the lower chamber.

The resolution underscores the significance of proximity to government agencies, multinational corporations, local businesses, and tech startups to ensure accessibility for Filipinos from various backgrounds. It also emphasizes the need to factor in the availability of funds in considering the relocation.

The backdrop for this proposal includes the approval, in 2017 during the 17th Congress, of the construction of a new Senate building in BGC. This decision arose from concerns about increasing space limitations in the Senate's existing Makati premises, as articulated by then-Senate Committee on Accounts chairperson Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson.
