WATCH: Taguig City University Roof Deck Urban Farm

There’s top-of-the-line farm technology on top of Taguig City University’s roof deck, thanks to a partnership entered by the City Government to further the cause of urban farming.

The roof top of the probinsyudad’s flagship university is now a model hydroponics and aquaponics garden, using technologies brought to our shores by the Pass It Forward initiative and the Embassy of Israel in the Philippines.

“We are very thankful because we are now enjoying modern technology that you often see in Israel and it’s really amazing how they are so generous with the technical expertise and the resources that they have,” noted Mayor Lani Cayetano. “The City of Taguig is very thankful and proud because Pass It Forward gave us a beautiful gift, a gift that we can pass on to the next generation.”

With the top-of-the-line farming technology, she noted, “we’re hoping ... Taguig City will be the pioneer city in promoting farming in urban setting.”

The farm showcases a hydroponics systems, a pond suited for raising fish, displays of home-friendly technologies and a nursery.

The project is part of a bigger push for sustainability in the city, which envisions more green spaces, a healthier diet for Taguigeños and a source of livelihood for the poorest of the poor.

“Later on, we want to see this all over the city, not just in government-owned facilities but also private residences, restaurants and office buildings, so it will be a green revolution in the city of Taguig,” Mayor Lani added.
