'Love Bus' Returns to Davao City with Free Rides

The "Love Bus," a government-run public transport service, has made a return in Davao City, offering free and comfortable rides to residents traveling along the Roxas Avenue-Lasang route.

The initiative, part of the national government's "Libreng Sakay" (Free Ride) program, was officially launched on July 24, 2025, by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to ease the daily commute for residents.

The air-conditioned buses operate during peak hours to serve commuters who often face challenges in finding public transportation. Nightly trips run from Roxas Avenue, passing through Bajada, Sasa, and Panacan, before reaching Lasang proper. Morning trips run in the opposite direction, starting from Lasang and ending at Roxas Avenue.

The free bus service utilizes at least eight 49-seater buses to serve up to 8,000 commuters daily. The program has a yearly budget of ₱70 million and is expected to continue until 2028. According to Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, the initiative is a response to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to provide assistance to commuters, students, and senior citizens nationwide. The service is available every day, including weekends and holidays.

This free service complements the city's existing Peak Hours Augmentation Bus System (PHABS) and is seen as a precursor to the upcoming Davao Public Transport Modernization Project (DPTMP). The return of the "Love Bus" in Davao and Cebu is a pilot program that is planned to expand to other major cities in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The "Libreng Sakay" program is a significant relief for commuters who can save approximately ₱100 per round trip, a considerable amount for workers and students.
