CICC Cracks Down on Influencers Promoting Illegal Online Gambling

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has begun issuing show cause orders to social media influencers who continue to promote illegal online gambling, warning of serious legal consequences, including charges of syndicated and large-scale estafa.

CICC Deputy Executive Director Asec. Renato “Aboy” Paraiso announced that the agency started sending notices to content creators on July 15. Several influencers have reportedly complied by voluntarily removing their posts and taking down affiliated sites.

“We thank those influencers who responded to our appeal and stopped promoting illegal online gambling,” Paraiso said in an interview with state-run PTV. “However, some remain defiant.”

For those who refuse to cooperate, Paraiso emphasized that the agency will proceed with formal show cause orders demanding explanations as to why they should not be held legally accountable.

“Ayoko pong magmukhang sinungaling,” Paraiso said. “We will follow through on our warning and send letters requiring them to explain why they shouldn’t face legal action.”

In addition to legal steps, the CICC is collaborating with major social media platforms to disable accounts and pages of repeat offenders.

He stressed that this may constitute syndicated and large-scale estafa—both non-bailable offenses under Philippine law.

“With many victims involved and influencers acting as accomplices, this qualifies as syndicated and large-scale estafa,” he said. “This is the kind of serious case they could soon be facing.”

The CICC's efforts mark a significant step in curbing the widespread promotion of illegal online gambling, a growing concern as such activities continue to proliferate on digital platforms. Authorities urge the public to report suspicious activities and refrain from engaging with unregulated online gambling channels.
